Often using the back of a tractor or front-end loader, backhoes are a common sight on work sites where both digging and loading needs to be done. One of the primary features of a backhoe is the swivel seat in the cab. This allows the operator to easily switch from the loader to the digger, without needing to get out or change attachments. This helps to speed up work on the work site, as there is no need to waste time connecting a new attachment or bringing in a second machine.
While most backhoes share many common traits, there is one area where there is variety, 2WD, 4WD or tracked. Choosing the right style is important, otherwise you may end up spending even more on additional machinery to help get the work done.
2WD backhoes are ideal for work sites where there is basically no difficult terrain and there will be no hassle driving around. 4WD backhoes are suited to work sites where terrain might be trickier to drive around and where hills or slopes might play a part. Tracked backhoes are for work sites where terrain is incredibly difficult. They're suited for tough, seasonal work conditions--including mud, sand and snow.
Many backhoe models also include features that increase their stability outside of the 2WD, 4WD or tracked options. These include hydraulic outriggers or stabilising legs. This allows the backhoe to handle heavier loads than other machines--even on uneven terrain.
While backhoes have been very popular over the years, their numbers have been slowly coming down on work sites across Australia, mostly due to the improvements for loaders and mini excavators. While it's still true that the versatility of backhoes is incredible, specialised machines are always going to be able to do a slightly better job (in most cases).
Of course, for farmers or small projects where money is tight, the convenience of having a 2-in-1 machine is hard to pass.
Backhoes provide work sites with a versatile machine that can handle a variety of tasks without the need to change attachments or switch drivers. Whether it's digging, loading or a mix of both, backhoes are more than capable of getting the work done.
