There are 2 main types of trenchers, walk behind and self-propelled. Walk behind, like the name suggests, are models where the operator has to work behind and push the trencher forward to create the trench. While a self-propelled model will automatically move forward in a straight line.
Of course, it's always recommended you walk behind the machine, even if it's self-propelled, for safety reasons. Both versions will also usually come with additional safety features like a safety clutch that can be easily toggled to shut off the wheels and chain immediately.
Most trenchers are designed for a limited range of digging depth, meaning you may need to hire multiple trenchers if you need to dig at varying depths and widths. Of course, there are models that are more flexible and can switch out chains and blades to create different width trenches. Simply speak to your chosen hire company to see if they have any models that have a wide range of dig depth and width.
As with most hire machinery, many companies will offer a number of hire options to help cater to your specific needs. Generally starting from around 4 hours as the minimum hire period, trencher hire will often be available for as long as a week from some hire companies. You may even be able to get a better rate if you are hiring for an extended period.
While trenchers aren't particularly large compared to some hire machinery, they are still too large and heavy to pick up and go in the boot of a car. So, unless you have a work Ute with ramps, you may need to consider hiring a trailer at the same time. These will be packaged together in some cases, so make sure you tell your chosen hire company in the event you don't need to hire a trailer at the same time. Or, in some cases you can organise delivery so it will arrive on the day you need it without you needing to go and pick it up yourself.
If you're not used to operating a trencher, or simply don't have the time to get the job done yourself, talk to your trencher hire company about their wet hire options. While not offered by every company, some will have the option of wet hire which can give you more free time to get other parts of your project done or simply let you have a more experienced operator handle the work.
