Cat 140H Grader Overview
First produced in 1995, the Cat 140H grader is a trusted classic in motor graders. While there have been many advancements in Caterpillar graders since then, many still prefer the grunt and controls of the older 140H grader.
The 140H grader is articulated and a little less powerful than the newer 140M grader, with 165 base HP (compared to 183 for the M series), but as an older model that’s to be expected. It’s still a reliable, durable machine that seems to be a favourite among operators and owners alike.

Cat 140H Features
In the Cab
For its time, the 140H does have a spacious and (somewhat) comfortable cab, thanks to its adjustable suspension seat and armrests. The cab also includes:
- Electronic clutch pressure control (ECPC) system
- Electronic throttle control
- Monitoring system with diagnostic capabilities
- Large side windows and improved forward visibility (compared to the G series)
- Reduced engine noise in cab
The 140H includes innovative changes to improve operator efficiency and, in turn, greater machine productivity.

Under the Bonnet
There’s a lot going on in the 140H that makes it powerful and reliable. The engine itself is designed for high torque output, extended life, fuel efficiency and variant horsepower for easier operation. All while being emissions compliant for its time. When looking at the rest of the machine, Cat have thought of just about everything:
- Electronic overspeed protection
- 8 forward and 6 reverse speeds
- Power shift transmission
- Direct drive
- Balanced flow, blade float & load-sensing hydraulics
- Independent oil supply
The 140H frame and engine is designed and built to exceed the expectations of the customer.

Serviceability
When designing the 140H, Caterpillar placed a lot of emphasis on serviceability and easy maintenance. They did this by focusing on creating a ‘service center’ as one central point for most routine inspections and maintenance needs. Other serviceability features include:
- Ground-level fuel tank
- Extended oil change interval
- Cat XT hose technology
- Radiator cleanout access
Cat 140H Price
Cat 140H motor graders cost between $62,300 and $325,000, averaging at $181,788 (used). The average price of a 140H listing on Machines4U is $82,500*.
Common Cat 140H Problems
As with any machine with lots of moving components and hydraulic systems, the Cat 140H is susceptible to issues. Here are the most common complaints we’ve found when it comes to this piece of kit:
- Hydraulic pressure issues
- Overheating problems
- Transmission problems
Of course, these issues can occur in any machine and (generally) can be easily fixed should they occur.
