Review: PlasmaCAM and Samson CNC Cutting Systems

PlasmaCAM is heralded as the world’s leading brand in CNC robotic plasma cutting machines.

We spoke to Maurice from Metal Form Group to get the lowdown on the machines and find out what it is about PlasmaCAM that gives them an edge on the competition.

PlasmaCAM specs

The machines come in two sizes:

PlasmaCAM DHC2

Cutting Area – 1220 x 1220mm

Samson 510

Cutting Area – 3000 x 1500mm

Both machines boast the same set of features and functions:

  • Closed-loop servo controller allows for perfect positioning, even under difficult conditions;
  • Fine detail, high productivity, and fast cutting speeds are enhanced through rigid moving parts without excessive weight;
  • Speed is adjustable during operation;
  • The machine can automatically slow down when working around corners and holes;
  • The gantry is synchronously driven from both ends, providing maximum accuracy;
  • The cutting grate is able to precisely align to the frame;
  • The wide plasma cutting torch is perfectly compatible with the easy to install interface;
  • A range of Hypertherm Powermax plasma cutters is available to suit any requirements;
  • The height of the torch can easily be manipulated using the unique digital height control system.

What makes PlasmaCAM so great?

When asked why Metal Form Group see PlasmaCAM as the best brand in its class, Maurice pointed to a special set of features none of its competitors offer:

  • Their user-friendly software is the best on the market;
  • 3 year warranty (no-one else offers such a long warranty period);
  • Life-long technical support;
  • Technicians can remotely login to your system and are always available by phone or email;
  • You will receive onsite training as part of your package;
  • Parts are easily interchangeable and can be sent by overnight airmail;
  • The machines are in-stock in Australia, so you can have it all set up in your workshop within the week.

Let’s be real: no machine is perfect

In comparison to laser and water jet CNC machines, plasma is the most economical. It has the lowest upfront cost, is the cheapest to run and easiest to use. However, Maurice warned you do get a little bit of dross, making it better suited for fabrication and welding work, rather than high precision work.

With a bit of clean up, the plasma machines give great results, particularly when you take into account their speed and cost-effectiveness. But it depends on what you’re using it for. If you’re a precision engineer, a water jet machine may be the choice for you. However, they are much slower and a lot more expensive.

Who is the PlasmaCAM ideal for?

According to Maurice, general engineering shops, hot rod shops, 4WD manufacturers, refrigeration manufacturers and commercial kitchens will all love the PlasmaCAM.

The guys at Eval Motorcycles were stoked with their machine and have been putting it to use on a whole range of workshop tasks (check out what they said here).
