Henrob Self-Pierce Riveting (HSPR) is a cold joining process used to fasten two or more sheets of material by driving a rivet through the top sheet(s) and upsetting the rivet, under the influence of a die, into the lower sheet without piercing it.
Speed and quiet operation are features of each system. Typical riveting cycle time ranges from 1.0 to 4 seconds.
HSPR has a number of advantages over other joining techniques, such as welding and blind riveting:
It joins a range of dissimilar materials such as:
steel
aluminium
plastics
It joins multiple material stacks
Non-thermal process – can be used after coating or painting with virtually no aesthetic or other damage
Low energy demands
Fast cycle times
Operator and environment friendly; no heat, fumes, sparks or waste
Repeatable quality
Visually checkable joint
Compatible with adhesives and lubricants
Automatic rivet feed allows continuous production.
Self-Pierce Riveting is a process of joining two or more layers using an engineered rivet. Unlike
conventional riveting, HSPR does not require a drilled or punched hole. In terms of product design and ease of integration into your manufacturing process, HSPR is a very flexible system. Ensuring superior, consistent joint performance, HSPR can outperform both conventional riveting & welding.
Manual hydraulic riveting systems have been produced by Henrob since 1985. Many of those early systems are still in service today, a testament to their design and high quality components.
A standard system is configured with a hydraulic power-pack delivering oil via flexible hydraulic hoses to a tool consisting of a C-frame mounted rivet setter and upsetting die. Activation is by either a switch handle (mounted on the back of the C-frame) or a foot switch.
The C-frame is a critical element of the overall system because it not only contains the high riveting forces and accurately aligns the rivet setter to the upsetting die, it can also be customised to allow riveting access to specific applications.
Using 3D CAD will tailor-made designs. All C-frames are analysed for stress and deflection using finite element analysis (FEA) to ensure long life.
