This machine is of much heavier construction than the previous lathes listed. It features 1370mm over the bed, 1100mm over the carriage and 8000mm between centres. This model incorporates reduction drive pinion and ring gear onto the chuck for heavy cutting applications.
FEATURES
The machine is designed for performing various lathe operations, including taper turning and cutting metric, inch and module threads. Compared to other machines of its class, the lathe offers higher rigidity, vibration resistance and non susceptibility to thermal effects. These features allow machining to higher accuracy.
Ample power of main drive, a wide range within which spindle rotation frequency and feed rates can be carried, enable high speed steel and carbide tipped tools to be used expediently for machining ferrous and non ferrous metals.
This machine is a very heavy duty lathe built to toolroom standards. The main speed box has 24 speeds ranging from 5 500 r.p.m. It is a fully enclosed gearbox with it’s own lubrication system fed by a plunger type pump, cam operated from gear box lay shaft. The headstock has no clutches at all and has to be started forward and reverse from a stop position. When using low speeds (5 63 revs.) the 1 meter diameter steel four jaw chuck supplied with the machine is driven via a pinion gear meshing with an internal ring gear on the back of the chuck. This ensures ample power while turning at slow speeds on large diameters, an electro magnetic brake is supplied. For example, we recently did some sheave wheels, on a diameter of 900mm we were able to plunge feed with a 25mm diameter button tool straight in on feed for machining groove without any vibration or chatter.
The feed box is mounted on the front of the machine below the speed box and has its own lubrication system with a similar plunger type pump operated on the feed shaft, all gears and spline shafts are made from alloy steel and are hardened and ground, in the feed box and speed box. All feeds and thread cutting speeds can be easily changed without the need for additional change gears. An ampmeter is located on the panel beside the headstock which can be easily seen from the saddle.
The machine is supplied with 2 steadies for the feed and lead screws which can easily slide along the length of the bed to steady feed and lead screws and to stop them from whipping at high speed.
The saddle is supplied with quick traverse which is driven through a separate motor mounted on the right hand lower end of the saddle and supplies drive through a gearbox and two electro magnetic clutches which has a separate lubrication system to drive quick traverse, longitudinal and cross directions. The quick traverse is controlled by a four way switch (joystick) mounted on a panel above the quick traverse electric motor. The quick traverse is simply selected by pushing the four way switch in the direction you want to go which automatically engages the feed and by pushing the button located on the top of the four way switch engages the quick traverse in the same direction. A work light is mounted on the saddle.
Below the quick traverse switch is mounted the on/off switch for the coolant pump. On the end of the saddle to the left of the quick traverse switch are three switches, one is emergency stop, one forward direction and the other reverse direction, these switches are also mounted on the headstock. below these switches is a lever for engaging and disengaging the lead screw. A cross slide handle and longitudinal handle is fitted with a safety device so that it doesn’t spin while in quick traverse.
The travelling steady is mounted at the back of the cross slide, on the saddle. The travelling steady and the mounting frame are two separate pieces and it enables you to have approximately 300mm of longitudinal adjustment of the position of the travelling steady. This means that the travelling steady can be fixed either behind or in front of the tool. The travelling steady’s capacity is approximately 250mm diameter.
The tailstock is of extremely heavy construction and is fitted with built in live centre by simply inserting a dead centre. When drilling, the live centre becomes dead.
The tailstock quill is fitted with both a conventional feed handle at the end and to the side of it a reduction feed device which makes it much easier for heavy drilling. The tailstock is moved along the length of the bed by the means of a pinion gear engaging with an inverted rack on the under side front edge of the bed and is moved via a crank handle. When locking the tailstock, there is a pin device which engages with lugs on the bed itself, a combination of the tailstock locking on this bed lug and four lock down screws maintain an absolute positive locking while doing heavy work.
The fixed steady has a maximum diameter of 350mm and is supplied with hardened rollers on the tips as well as two sets of roller guides to enable the full movement.
The bed of the machine is a one piece casting which has a very wide longitudinal slide and a heavy web construction making it easy to remove the swarf from the back of the machine. The slideways are hardened and ground and the base of the machine houses a coolant tank and pump. The bed itself is cast one piece from the slide to the floor to ensure maximum rigidity.
Safe operation on the machine is ensured due to provision of a safeguard for the chuck and zone of cutting, mechanisms for disengaging the handwheels of longitudinal traverse and cross traverse, use of low voltage in control circuits.
It is necessary to have a foundation for this machine, the minimum requirement for foundation would be reinforced concrete with approximate depth of 1000mm. Please refer to drawing number 06 1018 attached which gives details of the loads placed on the foundation of this machine. The foundation depth should be calculated by a Civil Engineer using this chart and the results of soil test.
